Set on the outer edge of Brisbane City, Karawatha is located 25.5km south of Brisbane’s CBD by road, or a 26-minute drive in off-peak traffic with tolls. In 2016, Karawatha had a population of only 19 people recorded to be made up of elderly couples and singles as well as independent youths.

The majority of the land in Karawatha is used as undeveloped parkland known as the Karawatha Forest, with few structures and residential areas to be found. Formerly known as Berrinba, the suburb was renamed Karawatha, originating from an Aboriginal word translated to mean a place with pine trees.

By way of education, Karawatha has two private schools that teach children from prep right through to year 12. These include the co-ed Islamic College of Brisbane, with over 1000 students enrolled in 2018, and Faith Christian School of Distance Education which offers home-based education.

The most notable attraction of Karawatha is the vast Karawatha Forest, one of the largest areas of remnant bushland in Brisbane City. Visitors to the forest can enjoy bird watching, nature walks, picnic and barbeque facilities as well as the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre and nature playground.
