Franna Unveils Next-Generation Pick and Carry Cranes
Terex has announced a major leap forward in its iconic Australian-made pick and carry cranes, unveiling the new Franna AT40 Series 2, AT22 Series 2 and MAC25 Series 5. Long regarded as the workhorse of the Australian crane industry, the latest models are designed to deliver more power, greater efficiency, and higher safety standards, all while meeting future environmental compliance.
A New Heart: Mercedes-Benz OM936 Engine
At the centre of the upgrade is the Mercedes-Benz OM936 engine, Stage V and Tier 4 Final compliant. This advanced powerplant not only exceeds current Australian Design Rules (ADR) but also anticipates upcoming standards, ensuring operators are future-proofed against changing emissions laws. Franna partnered with Penske Power Systems to refine the integration, boosting power output and gearbox tuning for the unique demands of pick and carry cranes.
For operators, this means better reliability, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions – critical as the construction and infrastructure sectors focus on lowering environmental impact.
Model-Specific Improvements
- AT40-2: The flagship model gains a 230kW engine, cementing its place as the leader in lifting capacity. New deck panels also enhance serviceability.
- MAC25-5: Now upgraded in name and performance, featuring a 210kW engine, sharper boom and steering response, and safer isolator relocation outside the articulation zone.
- AT22-2: Versatile as ever, now powered by a 210kW engine, with a winch handrail included as standard for safer rear deck access.
All models now include Franna Safety Radar as standard, bolstering operator awareness on busy job sites.
Raising the Bar on Safety and Compliance
The upgrades arrive as Queensland’s Mobile Crane Code of Practice 2024 takes full effect, setting higher expectations for risk management, stability, collision prevention, and safe crane siting. Franna’s inclusion of ABS braking, noise and visibility improvements, and advanced safety systems align directly with these requirements, ensuring that contractors stay compliant while improving onsite safety.
What It Means for Customers
According to Franna, the new series delivers across four fronts:
- Efficiency: Optimised fuel use and streamlined maintenance reduce operating costs.
- Productivity: Simplified service access and refined controls keep cranes on the job longer.
- Safety: Radar, upgraded rear body design, and enhanced ergonomics create a safer working environment.
- Support: Franna’s engineering, service, and 24/7 product support teams have been retrained on the new series to minimise downtime and maximise value for operators.
A Legacy of Innovation
For more than 40 years, Franna has been the dominant name in pick and carry cranes. The launch of the Series 2 and Series 5 models signals the brand’s commitment to staying ahead of industry needs, blending legendary reliability with cutting-edge technology.
