The History of Kato Works

In Helpful Crane Info, Mobile Crane Types

Kato Works has been at the forefront of the construction machinery industry for over 128 years. Since its foundation in 1895, the company has grown from a small iron works into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cranes and construction equipment.

Early Years (1895–1940s)

Kato was founded in 1895 as Kato Iron Works. By the 1920s, the company had already begun manufacturing internal combustion locomotives. In 1935, it reorganised under the name Kato Works, cementing its place as a formal industrial manufacturer. During these early decades, the company focused on heavy machinery to meet Japan’s rapidly growing industrial and infrastructure needs.

Innovation and Growth (1950s–1970s)

The 1950s marked a turning point with Kato beginning the manufacture of fully hydraulic truck cranes in 1959—a technology that would set the standard for the industry. In 1963, the Ibaraki plant opened, and production of hydraulic excavators began the same year. By 1970, Kato was listed on the 1st section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, a clear sign of its rapid growth and global ambitions.

Expansion and Recognition (1980s–1990s)

The 1980s saw the operation of the Gunma plant and further advances in hydraulic machinery. In 1988, Kato’s IS-30G mini excavator was awarded the prestigious Good Design Award, highlighting the company’s focus on both performance and innovation. The 1990s brought global expansion, with new product launches and growing recognition in overseas markets.

Into the 21st Century

Kato has continued to develop advanced hydraulic cranes, excavators, and construction equipment throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Its machinery has been widely adopted across construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure projects worldwide. Today, Kato remains committed to innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility while maintaining its reputation as a pioneer in construction machinery.
