Tennyson Suburb Profile

Tennyson is a small southern suburb of Brisbane City, bordered by the Brisbane River to the north. Tennyson is located 9.5km south of Brisbane’s CBD by road or a 13-minute drive in off-peak traffic. The population of Tennyson recorded in the 2016 census was just 1,019 people.

There is only one school in Tennyson, a specific-purpose secondary school for students with complex mental health needs – Barrett Adolescent Centre Special School. The two closest primary schools to Tennyson are Sherwood State School and Yeronga State School, located in neighbouring suburbs. Yeronga also has the closest secondary school to Tennyson – Yeronga State High School.

Tennyson originally had its own railway station, however, services to the station have not been active since 2011. There are a number of city bus services that run through the suburb providing transport to the CBD and Indooroopilly.

Built in the prior location of a demolished power station is Tennyson’s Queensland Tennis Centre, an $82 million dollar tennis centre that was opened in 2009 that is used to host Brisbane’s annual international tennis tournament.

Said to be named after the British poet Alfred Tennyson, the suburb was originally dedicated as Softstone Pocket until a local businessman proposed that it be named Tennyson in 1887. Surrounding suburbs of Tennyson include Indooroopilly, Yeerongpilly, Rocklea, Sherwood, and Graceville.
